LE PERSPECTIVE / THE STORY

OpenAI plans to acquire Pierre Computer Company, whose technology already powers file navigation and code review inside Codex. The deal would bring OpenAI deeper into the infrastructure for storing and reviewing code produced by AI agents.

Announced on November 4, the acquisition includes Pierre’s Code Storage service and a collection of open-source developer tools. OpenAI did not disclose a purchase price. The transaction still requires regulatory approvals, and both companies remain independent until it closes.

The Bigger Play Is Source Control
Codex already helps write code. With Pierre, OpenAI wants to support the Git workflows around that code—including storage, review and collaboration as more work moves to agents.

Already Inside Codex

Pierre’s Trees library helps developers navigate files, while Diffs shows what changed between versions. Both are already used in Codex. Diffs also lets reviewers edit a line directly where they notice a problem, and Pierre’s newer Highlights library updates syntax coloring as code is typed or streamed by an agent.

The company’s Code Storage service takes on another piece of the workflow: letting applications store code and track its history using Git. OpenAI intends to bring those capabilities into Codex after the acquisition closes.

Why Git Matters More Now

AI coding agents can work on multiple branches at once. That creates more pushes, merges, fetches and code reviews than systems built around a human developer’s pace were designed to handle.

OpenAI has been solving that problem internally. On November 2, it detailed Pando, a Git-compatible source-control backend built for its engineers and agents. The company says Pando reduced median push latency by nearly 80% and now delivers almost a petabyte of Git data daily.

What Happens Next

OpenAI says Pierre’s open-source projects will stay open-source, with further contributions planned. Existing Code Storage customers can keep using the service while its functionality is brought into Codex. No completion date was announced.

The bigger question is how much of software development Codex will handle. Writing code is one step; managing its history and coordinating agents could make Codex a more complete development environment. OpenAI hasn’t announced a standalone GitHub replacement.
